Last year the Portuguese Governments released a very sketchy Penal Code aimed at improving the conditions in the country’s overcrowded prisons. The solution presented was very simple, let them out. Without further ado 115 criminals awaiting trial behind bars were released, one of which was being charged with sexually abusing and killing a disabled child.

Lisbon treaty – No referendum in Portugal

José Socrates has broken yet another one of his electoral promises by denying the Portuguese the opportunity to conduct a referendum concerning the Lisbon treaty. According to the Prime Minister, the referendum isn’t necessary given that he only promised to consult the Portuguese regarding a European Constitution.

Unemployment increases once again

Unemployment rose once again in Portugal to reach 8.2% in December. This came as a total surprise to the Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates that was more concentrated in closing various maternities around the country while also taking the time to play with the big boys in Brussels.
